EDGE from Broadcom is enhanced data for the GSM evolution. A wireless communication technology that uses GSM spectrum and acts as an enhancement to 2G and 2.5G mobile phone networks allowing high-speed data applications such as video services and other multimedia that benefit from increased data capacity. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications, a digital cellular phone technology based on TDMA that operates in the 1.9-GHz PCS band in the U.S., and is widely popular through out the rest of the world. GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, a standard for wireless communications that run at speeds of up to 115 Kbps, compared with GSM systems, which run at 9.6 Kbps. GPRS supports a wide range of bandwidths and is efficiently uses limited bandwidth, particularly suited for sending and receiving small bursts of data, such as for e-mail and web browsing, as well as large volumes of data.
